2022 WAFU Zone B AFCON: Burkina Faso ends Ghana’s title defence hopes

The title defense hope of the Black Satellites of Ghana has ended abruptly at the ongoing 2022 WAFU Zone B Championship following their 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso on Saturday afternoon.

With the result, the campaign of the defending champions at the ongoing tournament hosted in Niamey, Niger came to an end having failed to record a single point in the group stages.

They needed to beat Burkina Faso after losing their first group game to Nigeria by 2-0 but the task was beyond their reach.

Burkina Faso took the lead in the 33rd minute, but Alex Sarfo equalised for the Black Satellites just before halftime.

Coach Karim Zito and his boys’ dream were crushed in the stoppage time when the Burkinabe scored the game-winning goal.

This means Nigeria and Burkina Faso qualified from a group made up of three teams to the semi-finals with four points each.

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria now face Cote d’Ivoire on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, in the first semi-finals while the Benin Republic also comes up against Burkina Faso.
