The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of influencing the decision by the Ghana Police Service to secure a court injunction on their planned demonstration.
According to the disappointed drivers, the police’s action amounts to a deliberate attempt by the government to stop them from exercising their constitutional rights.
The commercial drivers had planned to hit the principal streets of Accra today Wednesday, June 1, 2022, to express their dissatisfaction over the concurrent hike in petroleum products.
But on the eve of the exercise, the police, however, secured an injunction application from the High Court and stopped the drivers from protesting
“The Ghana Police Service yesterday night served us with a court injunction from the High Court Justice Criminal Court 3 restraining us from demonstrating with our cars as we agreed on with the police,” a statement issued by the concerned drivers discloses.
Meanwhile, the drivers who seem to be worried about the development, argued that both parties had agreed on the demonstration and hence cannot fathom the “sudden change”
They described the application as a “deliberate attempt by the government to prevent us from exercising our constitutional rights.”
“We are calling on our members to hold their fire but not to let their guns, as negotiations are still ongoing to reschedule another date for the demonstration,” they urged its members in a statement.
