Former member of parliament for the Bantama Constituency, Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu has pointed out human activities as the cause of the disruption of the environment.

Speaking on the Anopa Bofoↄ morning show hosted by Kofi Adoma Nwanwani, Dr Kokofu who is the current Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), said the day-to-day activities carried out by the citizens have had some negative impacts on the environment.

Buttressing his claim, he noted that most fuel stations in the country have been situated in unauthorized places despite the operators’ awareness that it is offensive.

Citing South Africa for instance, he explained that polythene bags are usually expensive items in the country because they don’t want the bags to look appealing to potential buyers.

Again, he wondered how people dump waste indiscriminately forgetting that it poses a threat to their health, a situation he said “we must utilize common sense” to treat the environment with care.

He observed that the sector is ready to implement the EPA Act 490 of 1994 that governs the Agency to ensure the environment is protected.

To ensure the effective implementation of the laws, Dr Kokofu said persons who failed to abide by the rules and regulations would not go scot-free.

Asked whether these laws can be made to work, he responded “yes, Kofi, there are laws in the country” and therefore “the centre will hold.”

Addressing a viral video where two unknown commuters were captured dumping refuse in the gutters while it rained, Henry Kokofu vowed that those people would not go unpunished.
