Former Accra Hearts of Oak and Ghana Premier League legend, Ismael Addo, has said that Kotoko’s Frank Mbella cannot break his record by winning goal king once.

Setting the records straight following the ongoing comparison between the two, Ishmael Addo explained that even if Mbella scores to equal or break his record of 22 goals, he remains the greatest goal poacher in the Ghana Premier League.

According to him, he was adjudged the goal king three successive times therefore, Mbella can break his record only by achieving the same feat.

Ishmael Addo holds the highest ever goal tally of 22 he scored during the 2001/2002 Ghana Premier League season helping the Phobians to win the treble with him winning the golden boot award as the top scorer.

The Cameroonian international, who is making his debut in the 2021/22 GPL season has 21 goals to his name following his impressive form.

Many have since started comparing Mbella with the Hearts of Oak great, arguing that he could be regarded as the greatest striker to grace the GPL if he breaks Ismael Addo’s record which has lasted for 20 years.

Speaking in the local dialect in an interview with Accra-based Angel TV, the one-time CAF Champions League winner, categorically stated that breaking a record once cannot be compared to the feat he achieved successively.

“If we talk about record-breaking, it is not one season, I had a record of three times so his one-time (potential) goal king wouldn’t break my record”

“Back then, Dan Owusu had the record of winning the goal king three times before I came but then I also achieved the same feat, so it is not one goal king that would break my record,” Ishmael Addo told Sports Obama on Angel Sports Live.

The former Bastia, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Maccabi Netanya, and Ergotelis player however admitted that it would be a “good achievement” should the porcupine warriors striker break his two decades record.

With two matches to the end of the season, Franck Mbella will be expected to score one or more against Elmina Shark and Accra Lions FC to help him break the much-talked-about record.
