Ghana’s biggest security threat is internal; not external attacks – Kumadoe

A security consultant, Richard Kumadoe, has called on security capos in the country to prioritise Ghana’s internal security over external attacks.

According to him, Ghana has been battling major issues such as activities of land guards, who sometimes engage in sporadic attacks using various weapons including guns; acts which he insists are very disturbing.

He also pointed to the numerous chieftaincy clashes citing the continuous civil unrest in Bawku as an example of internal threat to the nation’s peace and security.

He argued that these threats deserve the same level of attention as according to him terrorists usually exploit the weaknesses in the country’s security measures.

“Ghana’s internal threat is higher than the external threat. Land guard is a major threat for us; chieftaincy is a major threat for us. Bawku is burning, you have not been able to resolve it and so the internal threat is a major issue”, Mr. Richard Kumadoe said on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo Morning Show.

He further called for intelligence gathering and intelligence coordination between Ghana and its neighbouring countries to forestall any violent extremism from terrorist groups.

The security consultant also counselled Ghanaians to take their personal security very serious and be conscious of their surroundings.

He also drew the attention of authorities to issues of food security and safety on the roads and public spaces.

“When you are travelling with these buses, who inspects the bags and luggage? They just put them in and it could be a bomb. That’s why in Europe and elsewhere, when there is an accident, they investigate it and query the drivers too.”

“But here road accidents can kill 500 people a year and these are some of the actual terrorist activities we need to pay attention to and those land guards who wear military uniforms and shoot indiscriminately. those are internally trained terrorist groups that threaten national security. It’s not about the one coming from outside.”

Reacting to leaked security documents, Mr. Kumadoe urged security experts to be cautious so that such sensitive information does not become public and compromise security.
