Health screening exercise reveals kidney related issues among dwellers of Gomoa

Medical professionals from the University of Georgia in the United States have raised concerns about renal illness among the Ghanaian youth.

The health experts claim that young people are developing kidney-related illnesses at a high rate, which is alarming.

Speaking to the media during a five-day health screening event held at Gomoa Dominase, a Senior Physician at Georgia University of Sciences, Prof Dr Alex Anderson, urged the public to take immediate preventative action against the health problem.

He said children require meat that is protein-rich for healthy growth and development, however, too much of it is unprofitable for adults.

He revealed that the high intake of the animal product among the adults makes them prone to illness, therefore, it is not surprising that kidney disease is prevalent in the country as observed in the community.

Thus, adults must monitor their meat consumption levels to avoid developing such illnesses, and to save their coffers since dialysis is expensive to undergo for treatment.

“Therefore, it is crucial that you also have to do certain things if you are diagnosed, such as lowering your salt intake, losing weight, exercising frequently and eating healthily,” he said, adding that failure to do so could be debilitating.

He furthered that many people suffer from hypertension but fail to properly manage the health problem while they continue to consume high amounts of meat, a behaviour he condemned.

The health screening exercise was organized by a former Member of Parliament for Gomoa East Constituency in the Central Region, Kojo Asemani. It was executed in partnership with the University of Georgia in the United States.

On his part, Mr Kojo Asemani stated that the people’s health is his top priority, which is why the health screening exercise was organised.

He claimed that despite not being in office, he still cares about the health of his people and will continue to provide them with excellent healthcare.

The health screening exercise took place in five communities: Gomoa Dominase, Buduatta, Buduburam, Nyanyano, and Gomoa Ojobi.

Some of the beneficiaries however thanked the former lawmaker for taking the initiative to improve their health while they expressed their happiness over the exercise.

“We are really appreciative of the former MP’s efforts in organizing this event. Even after we have removed him from office, he has continued to look out for us and to ensure our wellbeing, which is why we are thankful to him.”
