Former President, John Dramani Mahama, has asked President Akufo-Addo to sack his Finance Minister – Ken Ofori-Atta – and do major shake-up in his administration.

The ex-president also called for the reshuffling and removal of ministers whom he described as ‘dead woods’ for their failure to show active productivity to help Ghana’s ailing economy to get back on track.

John Mahama, who made the call at the launch of a policy think thank -Think Progress Ghana, believes that the move among other solutions he proffered would enable the Akufo-Addo-led administration navigate the current economic crisis and alleviate the sufferings of Ghanaians.

“It will serve the President well to use some instruments from the Presidential tool kit in times of crisis such as this. Fire your Finance Minister, conduct a major shake-up of government to remove the many dead woods that have turned ministries into their fiefdoms and finally huddle with the best brains this country has to formulate a comprehensive recovery plan for our economy.”

The 2020 flagbearer of the opposition NDC also told government to focus on debt restructuring, which he stressed has become unavoidable if the country is to ever overcome the present economic problems.

“The President must make the big and very important call and begin the process
to restructure our debt before we become like Sri Lanka which has sunk into
unimaginable economic and social crises”, he emphasized.

He added that “President Nana Akufo-Addo and his Head of the Economic Management Team, rather appallingly, remain nonchalant in the face of this serious crisis and have limited their response to the imposition of very harsh and regressive tax measures, one of which is the E-Levy, which has been roundly rejected by the people of Ghana.”

In Mr. Mahama’s view, the president is clutching at a ‘mere straw e-levy’ to stay afloat, which, he says is neither adequate nor viable as a sustainable response to the economic crisis.

“It is painfully obvious that beyond the ill-conceived E- Levy, the Akufo-Addo administration has no viable or credible plan of action to get us out of the current economic doldrums into which they have plunged us; meanwhile, there can be collective buy-ins from the Ghanaian people, development partners and the investor community that is being ignored,”
