Ghanaian sprinters Abdul-Rasheed Saminu and Benjamin Azamati delivered standout performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, winning their respective men’s 100m Heats in Glasgow.
In Heat 2, Saminu ran 10.01 seconds to win his race and automatically qualify for the semi-finals.
His impressive finishing time sets a record as the second fastest men’s 100m heat ever in Commonwealth Games history. It also marks his season’s best, beating his previous best of 10.02 seconds recorded at the Luzern Meeting in Switzerland.
Recall that in July 2025, he set a national record of 9.84 seconds, making him Ghana’s fastest 100-meter sprinter.
Fellow sprinter Benjamin Azamati also recorded a blazing time of 10.00 seconds in his heat to finish first.
His time surpasses Saminu’s, making it the fastest 100m heat ever in Commonwealth Games history. Both athletes now advance to the semi-finals and a step closer to their dream of winning a medal at the Games.
However, Isaac Botsio did not qualify from Heat 9 after finishing fourth and missing the automatic qualification position following a poor start.
His time was 10.40 seconds, ending his hopes at the event with a disappointing finish.
