Boxing: Isaac Dogboe beats Joet Gonzalez to line up world title fight

Ghana’s Isaac Dogboe came through a tremendous round-10 battle with America’s Joet Gonzalez to win a split decision at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, Minnesota in the United States.

The fight, which took place on Saturday, July 23, 2022, was a WBC final eliminator and gives Dogboe a second chance at the world featherweight championship.

The judges were split. Patrick Morley had Gonzalez just ahead at 96-94 but his score was overruled by Tim Cheatham and Mike Fitzgerald, who scored Dogboe by the same margin.

The result means he is now placed to challenge for a world title in his next fight as he pursues his dream of becoming a two-time world champion.

Dogboe started well in Saturday’s contest but as the bout developed, Gonzalez came on strongly. He threw combinations of punches, looking dangerous when Ghana’s Dogboe retreated to the corner.

“Royal Storm” Dogboe though was undeterred. He stood his ground in the ninth round, firing heavy up-close punches at Gonzalez.

In the 10th and what proved to become the last round, the Ghanaian who was determined unleashed a powerful punch at his opponent to finish confidently before waiting for the decision of the bout.
