The leadership of the Commonwealth Hall Junior Common Room (JCR) of the University of Ghana has denied its involvement in the purported violent clash with the Mensah Sarbah hall, as carried by the media.
The Commonwealth Hall served notice that it has no knowledge of the alleged chaotic confrontation adding that it “prides itself as a citadel of excellence and does not condone any form of violence of which the said incident is no exception”.
The clashes reportedly started Friday night, August 5, 2022, and extended into the early hours of Saturday, August 6, between the two groups on the campus.
Meanwhile, the police deployed its men to the campus to forestall any reprisal attack.
The hall, in its communique co-signed by JCR President, Paul Anim Inkoom and JCR Secretary, Daniel Kofi Boakye, said its attention was drawn to some media reportage and a press release emanating from the University Management dated 6th August 2022, echoing a clash between students of Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall.
But, it stated that the said media reportage seeks to put the hall’s name into disrepute however, it condemned any attempt to do so.
“Commonwealth Hall JCR seeks to, by this communique, dissociate itself from the said act of violence. We will like to state unequivocally that Commonwealth Hall has not engaged in any such act of violence and hereby condemn any attempt by any office or media house to put the Hall’s name into disrepute,” the Commonwealth Hall JCR said in the disclaimer.
It also charged authorities of the institution to ensure those found culpable in connection with the incident are punished.
The statement used the medium to applaud the security agencies for their swiftness to bring the situation under control.
Similarly, management of the University of Ghana in a statement issued by its Registrar, Mrs Emelia Agyei-Mensah, condemned the violent clash between students of the two halls and noted that efforts are underway to figure out the perpetrators.
“Management condemns these needless acts of violence that have led to injuries and destruction of property, and calls on students of the two Halls to immediately halt any planned continuation of these acts.
“Efforts to identify the perpetrators are ongoing, and those found culpable of breaking national laws or University regulations, will be appropriately sanctioned.
“Management assures the University community of its resolve to ensure that academic work and other activities proceed without hindrance, and of its commitment to safeguarding peace and stability on all campuses of the University”, the statement indicated.
