The Executive Director of the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS), Nana Yaw Akwada, is asking the Forestry Commission to provide credible answers on what led to the killing of a middle-aged man by a lion at the Accra Zoo on Sunday, August 28, 2022.

The Forestry Commission who confirmed the incident in a statement said the deceased is believed to have manoeuvred his way through the fence and entered the lion’s enclosure where one of the lions attacked him leading to his death.

“The intruder was attacked and injured by one of the lions, within the inner fencing of the enclosure. The intruder has been confirmed dead from injuries sustained and the body has been conveyed to the morgue.”

The Commission further denies reportage suggesting that the lions had escaped from their enclosure leading to the incident

Reacting to the development, the Executive Director of BPS, Nana Yaw Akwada, questioned the level at which the Commission established that the deceased was an intruder and challenged them to provide further explanation on the matter.

“Forestry Commission need to provide better and further particulars on events leading to the death of a man (not an intruder) within their facility. Did they report the matter to the police before disposing of the body at the morgue? Have the police investigated the matter? The FC itself, has it done any investigations on how someone can wander into a lion’s den under their watch?” Nana Akwada quizzed in a Facebook post.

He again questioned the safety and security measures at the Accra Zoo under the helm of the Forestry Commission.
“Please Forestry Commission, the Bureau of Public Safety is heading your way. We need to understand what safety and security measures failed at this facility under your watch which led to the unfortunate alleged incident of lion attack on a citizen of the land,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has commenced investigations into circumstances leading to the death of the man who was allegedly attacked by one of the lions at the Accra Zoo.

A statement issued by the police said they are working with the management of the Zoo and the forestry commission on the investigation.
