Nandom Senior High School (SHS) has defeated St. Paul’s SHS at Denu and Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ SHS to advance into the one-eighth stage of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).
Coming all the way from Nandom, in the Upper West Region, the ‘De Michan boys’ emerged winners after securing 41 points at the end of the five-round contest held at the KNUST SHS auditorium on Day 2 of the contest.

Their closest contender, St. Paul’s SHS, scored 27 points while Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ SHS trailed with 22 points.
Nandom SHS took the lead with 18 points at the end of round one while Afua Kobi and St. Paul’s garnered 12 and 11 points respectively.
However, round two saw St. Paul’s catching up with Nandom at 18 points.
Announcing their victory, the Quiz Mistress, Dr. Thelma Ohene-Agyei said “this means Nandom Senior High School is the twelfth school to qualify from the prelims stage to the one-eighth stage of the National Championship of the NSMQ 2022. Congratulations Nandom, well done…”

Nandom SHS, who pride themselves as the “Pride of the North”, also bagged the Goil Riddle Bonanza which is worth Ghc800 after answering three out of the four riddles correctly.

The preliminary contests for the annual NSMQ commenced on Monday, October 10, 2022.
In all, 24 schools battled it out on Day 1 of the competition for a slot into the one-eight stage of the prelims at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
This is the second time the competition is being held in Kumasi on the KNUST campus, with 117 schools set to participate in the preliminary stage.
At the end of the competition, the Quiz Mistress noted that Nandom SHS stands the chance of winning another award should their score remain the highest by close of day.
“If your score remains the highest for the day you will also win the Airtel-Tigo highest scorer award which at this stage is worth GHS1,000.”
