The National Labour Commission (NLC) and the striking teacher unions are expected to conclude their meeting within next 10 days amidst suspension of their industrial action.

According to the Secretary of the University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Prof. Ransford Gyampo, their meeting with the NLC has been rescheduled and would hopefully take place in the coming days.

This follows a failed attempt to get the striking public university workers union to rescind their decision at a meeting on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

Prof. Gyampo in a disclosure on the excerpts of their meeting, said since the Finance Ministry has an important role to play in addressing the concerns of the unions it was key to give the sector some ample time.

Proceeding, he cited the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta’s ongoing probe that would delay the process following a motion of censure against the minister in Parliament.

“We have brought this proposal to the National Labour Commission, and they have also sort of agreed that we should wait and go on with the discussion in the next 10 days,” he said in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM.

The striking teacher unions are the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Teacher and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), Senior Staffs Association of University of Ghana (SSA-UoG) and Ghana Association of University Administration (GAUA).
