Ghanaians should anticipate lower transportation costs starting on Monday, December 19, 2022, according to the Ministry of Transport.
This announcement came after the fuel prices at some pumps have begun to reduce.
Friday, December 16, 2022, diesel is predicted to be offered at GH¢15 per litre while the cost of petrol is anticipated to decrease even further.
Therefore, the ministry has said that it is in talks with the transport operators to lower the prices to a point where both passengers and operators will benefit.
In an interview with Citi News, the Deputy Transport Minister, Hassan Tampuli stated that “we understand that the fares will definitely come down. It is the margin of reduction that we are still negotiating. We are waiting for the next pricing window on Friday [December 16, 2022].
“So, when the new prices are announced, we will see the clearest picture and we will see the percentage margin for the reduction of fares. We do not have the full picture until the window opens on Friday. Hopefully, by Monday, the general public should see a reduction in transport fares,” he furthered.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU), Godfred Abulbire, has advised Ghanaians to save their breath while looking forward to a reduction shortly.
“Once the fuel prices have come down, the fares will be reduced. The reduction is obvious. Fare increment is not in the interest of anybody. Today, what we have discussed is to arrive at the margin for reduction that the general public and operators will equally be satisfied with. So on Monday, we will conclude on the actual margin,” Mr Abulbire assured.
However, the Ministry of Transport meeting with the transport operators on December 15, 2022, to have a reduction in fares could not be achieved.
