The Member of Parliament for Wa West Constituency in the Upper West Region, is calling on personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to ensure its men deployed to Bawku discharge their duties cautiously.
Peter Lanchene Toobu fears the situation could become worse, if the officers deployed to contain the violence there end up lose their focus.
The lawmaker gave the advice Friday, February 3, 2023, on the Anopa Bofo morning show on Angel FM/TV on the back of the claims, soldiers sent to make peace in the area after recent clashes, have rather ended up killing residents.
Although the administration of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) refuted the allegations in a statement, the MP maintained that the actions and inactions of their men should be revised.
“That notwithstanding, I plead with the military in Bawku who are being tagged with bad names, to revise their notes because that is not why they were sent there. You went there purposely to serve the people of Bawku for peace to prevail.
“So, in line of your services, you people [The Military] should be very careful people do not end up tagging you with helping one of the factions…,” Peter Lanchene told the host, Kojo Oppong Kyeremeh
The former police officer also reminded the military that they were deployed to “protect lives and ensure peace prevails in Bawku and its environs and nothing else.”
He also pleaded with the people in Bawku especially the two factions involved in the conflict, to seize fire because the protracted conflict is negatively impacting the area.
