An entourage of the Ghana Education Service led by its Director-General, Dr Eric Nkansah, has paid a visit to the bereaved families of the eight pupils who drowned in the Volta Lake following a boat disaster in the Sene East District of the Bono East Region.

The deceased were among 20 pupils who were in the boat travelling from Atikagome to Wayokope, where their school is located.

The unfortunate incident occurred on January 24, 2023, at about 7:00 am per reports.

According to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), twelve pupils out of the number managed to swim to safety whiles the remaining eight could not but succumb to the situation. The deceased comprised five boys and three girls between the ages of 5 and 12.

Three weeks after the incident, a team from the GES on Friday, February 10, 2023, visited the family of the bereaved families to commiserate with them.

They also seized the opportunity to inspect a piece of land donated by the community to be used for the construction of a school in the island community within the shortest possible time.
