The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims that the commission disrespected Parliament by denying an invitation to attend a meeting called by the August House.
Parliament had advertised on 23rd February, 2023 that it had invited the EC to brief the House on the registration of voters scheduled for 24th February, 2024.
The meeting was however cancelled at the last minute by Parliament alluding to the failure of the Chairperson of the Commission, Jean Mensah to honour the invitation.
Parliament deemed her failure as an act of disrecpect to the authority of Parliament.
But the Commission has in a letter refuted the allegation insisting that it was ready for the meeting and even assigned a Deputy Commissioner, Bossman Asare and other personnel from the EC to represent the organisation.
Dr Bossman Asare, the EC added had to represent the institution because Madam Jean Mensah had travelled to Nigeria to observe the country’s election which took place over the weekend.
“The fact remains that the invitation from Parliament was sent a day before the meeting, a time when the Chairperson was out of the jurisdiction. Had she been aware of the request prior to her travel, she would have prioritized the meeting and attended upon the Honourable House…,” the statement from the commission concluded.
