Traders at the Kumasi central market known as Kejetia market in the Ashanti region, are back to business today, March 21, 2023, after days of closure following a fire that gutted the facility.

The agitated traders who opposed the extension decision of the market closure now have a sigh of relief since their shops and stalls can now be reopened to carry out their day-to-day activities.

This was made possible following the intervention of Vice president, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to satisfy growing disquiet among traders after the management of the facility announced an additional week of the facility closure.

According to the Vice president, the cause of the fire was identified as an explosion by an unattended cooking gas cylinder and not an electrical fault therefore the need for the market to be open to safeguard the livelihood of the agitated traders.

“It is clear that you are not doing business because of this incident. But after speaking with personnel from the fire service, the market will be reopened for trading activities…,” Dr, Bawumia said on Monday, March 20, when he visited the market.

The Vice president assured all traders who were affected by the fire of a helping hand from the government.

On their part, the traders were thankful to Dr Bawumia for his intervention and assured him of extra caution henceforth to prevent any unforeseen incident in the future.
