The incumbent Member of Parliament for Tamale South Constituency in the Northern Region, Haruna Iddrisu, has embraced Ghana Education Service’s decision to probe into the alleged usage of toilet cubicles as dormitories by students at Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO).
His support of the GES follows the indefinite suspension of the Headmaster of the School, Douglas Haruna Yakubu, and the Senior Housemaster, Sayibu Fuseini after videos emerged that the institution’s toilet facilities had been converted into dormitories for use by students.
The GES in its decision urging the two to step aside for investigations to be carried out, said the development was “disturbing and unfortunate” because the school has excess capacity to house an extra 300 students with only 1467 out of 1790 vacancies declared by the school being filled.
Northern Regional Directorate of the GES Education has however been tasked to lead the investigations and report back its findings within two weeks.
Reacting to the matter, the former Minority Leader said he fully supports the service in ensuring the iota of truth about the allegations is ascertained because the conditions as captured in the viral video are “unfortunate” and “disappointing” if found to be true.
According to the Tamale South MP, concluding the investigation will give assurance to parents and the general public about the safety and well-being of students in the school.
Haruna Iddrisu furthered and called on the “government, the GES and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to take a comprehensive review of the infrastructure requirements and other complimentary facilities needed to support effective teaching and learning in school.”
He announced his planned schedule to embark on a visitation to the school as a member of parliament for the area to ascertain current happenings for himself.
