The Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency, Alexander Akwasi Acquah, has challenged NDC MPs to explain to Ghanaians the content of a viral video which shows a group of people wielding and brandishing weapons in the House of ex-President John Mahama during a supposed clean up exercise.

The MP demanded the explanation when he contributed to the budget debate on the floor of parliament on Monday, November 27, 2023.

Mr. Akwasi Acquah wondered how those who had gone to do clean up at the residence of Mr Mahama ended up brandishing weapons and threatening mayhem.

He told Parliament these are some of the things that deter tourists from visiting Ghana.

He said Ghana’s tourism sector “had started showing some improvements after the COVID 19 restrictions and that calls for circumspection and carefulness in what we show to the outside world.”

His comment, and however, attracted a lot of heckling from the NDC who didn’t see the need for such in a budget debate.

Inspite of attempts by the leadership of the NDC to stop Mr Akwasi Acquah from debating on those lines, the MP kept on demanding an explanation and an apology to the content of the video which he claimed was an affront to tourism in Ghana.

The Akim Oda MP who is also the Vice Chair of the Trade, Industry and Tourism committee in Parliament, applauded government in rehabilitating the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum which now attract many tourists and earning a whooping Gh¢1million a month, instead of a paltry Gh¢3,100 in its former state.

He called for more investments in such areas to shore up the revenue from the tourism sector.
