Following the poor display of Ghana at the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the head coach of the senior national team, Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties.
The decision announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) was taken after the Black Stars crashed out of the tournament without a win in their three group games.
In a statement published after Ghana’s exit from the tournament in Ivory Coast, the GFA noted that the technical team had also been dissolved pending a roadmap on the future of the Black Stars.
“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect. The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.”
The statement added football association will in the coming days provide a “roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”
Hughton was appointed in February 2023, replacing Otto Addo whose contract with the men’s senior national team expired after the 2022 World Cup.
He thus supervised Ghana’s qualification for the AFCON 2023 as well as supervising the start of the Stars’ 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Until his appointment, he was the Technical Adviser of the Black Stars.
