Anti-LGBTQ: Parliament won’t fail Ghanaians – Majority Leader

Majority leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu

The monetization of elections in the country is unbecoming and must be addressed, Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has said.

He averred that the concern must be of national interest to find a holistic approach to curb it since it poses a threat to the nation’s democracy and is a potent breeder of corruption.

“The highest bidder in our politics will soon lead us to sell our parties to individuals if care is not taken,” the Member of Parliament for Suame in the Ashanti Region warned.

“Unfortunately, too, we fail to inquire about the background of these political individuals seeking positions,” he called to attention and added, “by the time we realized, then, drug peddlers would be voted to Parliament and when this occurs then we should ask ourselves where Ghana is heading.”

“So, we have to take a second look into this monetization of elections in the country because my only worry is that the corruption and corruption-related activities it brings about are becoming too many,” he told Okatakyei Afrifa-Mensah.

The MP added that once we continue doing this “you always end up reaping exactly what you sow.”

He however suggested that a review of the electoral system both internally and externally be considered, especially internal polls to forestall some of the malpractices.

“I keep repeating that if we want to continue practicing this governance system, we should go downstream and expand our electoral system to allow everyone at the constituency level to exercise their franchise during internal polls than the delegates way,” he stated.
