The largest opposition party, National Democratic Congress, has dismissed 18 members from the party for contesting as independent parliamentary candidates in the December 7 general elections.

They include a former Member of Parliament for Garu-Tempane, Dominic Azumah, and a former District Chief Executive for Kintampo South, Kwadwo Yame Datiakwa.

A statement signed by the NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah on Tuesday, November 3, said the affected persons who “sought for and obtained nomination from the Electoral Commission …have forfeited their membership of the party”.

NDC members who endorsed the candidature of these independent candidates, the party said, would be sacked as well.

Meanwhile, the candidates have been directed to return any property in the possession that belongs to the party.

“They must handover all party property in their possession to their respective constituency secretariats, and they must cease forthwith in using party paraphernalia and the name of the flagbearer in all their campaigns.

“It must also be noted that all Party members who endorsed your nomination form, campaigned for you or who openly associate themselves with your campaign activities are equally in breach of the above provisions and therefore, suffer the same punishment as the independent candidates.”
