Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has said he never doubted the possibility of the free senior high school which was initiated by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Kumasi-based Abusua FM, he emphasised that, he was the one who introduced the free senior high school, hence cannot doubt its possibility nor talk against it.

“I have never said anywhere that free SHS is bad and that, it is impossible to implement. I was the one that started with the ‘Progressively free SHS’ so how can I say it is bad?”

According to the former President, there was not enough infrastructure in order to contain the huge number of students in the country when he launched the free SHS in 2015.

To achieve a full roll-out of the free senior high school, his government began with building community day senior high schools across the country, he explained.

“I knew that when the free SHS is rolled out at once, the schools would be overburdened like we are seeing now. That is why my government started it gradually to absorb the fees of the day students. I never said it would be impossible.

“The double track we are seeing today is what I wanted to prevent,” the leader of the opposition party stated.
