President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has softened restrictions on playing behind closed doors as fans can now go to the stadium.
On March 15, 20202 due to the rise of COVID-19 cases in Ghana, President Akufo-Addo banned all public gatherings, including sporting activities. That resulted in the truncation of all football competitions, including the Ghana Premier League, Women’s Premier League, Division 1 and FA Cup for both men and women.
A press release signed by the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, on January 5, 2021, stated that only 25% of the stadium capacity will be available for supporters during match days.
“Ghana has made significant progress in combating the disease of late. Government has therefore eased the restriction of playing behind closed doors. Seating at all stadia will therefore be limited to Twenty-Five (25%) capacity as previously announced by the President. All existing safety and hygiene protocols are still in force.”
Meanwhile, the Minister assures the football fraternity that the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce will continue to monitor the situation and will advise as and when more spectators should be allowed to attend a match day.
