Jinapor urges miners to form associations among themselves to monitor activities

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has called on miners at Anyinam in the Atiwa East District of the Eastern Region to form associations to regulate their own activities in line with the community mining policy.

According to the Minister, the step will help rid of the system people who mine contrary to the community mining policy that is the “galamseyers”.

“Form associations among yourselves and monitor your activities. Those [Illegal miners] who would want to destroy your works report them to the authorities so that the government can help you too,” he said to the miners when he visited the mining community.

Speaking about reporting of illegal mining activities, a subdivision of the Ministry, Monitoring and Evaluation department set up a situation room at the Mezzanine Floor of Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) to receive reports of illegal mining activities across the mining areas in the country.

“Citizens, civil society, the media and the general public are encouraged to report any flouting of these directives or any other illegality relating to the mining sector,” the head of the department noted when he issued a communique indicating the steps taken to protect the environment.
