2020 Population Census: Ghana population now 30.8m- Statistical Service

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has released data on the country’s latest population, following the just ended 2020 Population and Housing Census exercise.

According to the data hub, Ghana’s populations currently stands at 30.8 million from its provisional results released on Wednesday, September 22, 2021.

The report indicated that the population has grown almost fivefold since the first post-independent census was conducted in 1960, but has declined compared with the 2010 census.

In a release, the Ghana Statistical Service, said between 2010 and 2021, 6.1 million persons have been born, increasing the population from 24.7 million to the current 30.8 million.

It again added that, the Greater Accra has overtaken Ashanti Region to become the country’s most populous among the 16 regions with 5.4 million people from the 4 million recorded in 2010. Thus, Greater Accra outnumbers Ashanti region’s current population of 5,432,485 with 13,752.

Meanwhile, the Ahafo Region now has become the least populous region with 600,000, replacing the Upper West region who in the last decade was known as the least populous region.

In other areas, out of the 10.7 million structures counted, about 20% of them were metal containers, kiosks, and wooden structures.

In the gender demography, greater proportion remains females as they lead in 10 out of the 16 regions nationwide representing 50.7% as against 49.3% of males.
