9 arrested for possessing ‘suspected’ Indian hemp

The Asuom Police District Command in the Eastern Region has arrested 9 persons who were in possession of some plant substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

According to a police report cited by Angelonline.com.gh, the arrest was affected during a swoop conducted by the District Command on Thursday 30 September, 2021 at about 4:00am.

The Eastern Regional Police PRO, Ebenezer Tetteh, confirmed the arrest to Taste FM in Koforidua.

“The Asuom District Command, led by DSP Stephen Abanga early this morning conducted swoops especially in places suspected to be hideouts of criminals or criminal dens”, he stated.

The suspects, comprised of one female and eight males, had in their possession 1049 wrapped Indian hemp.

“In all three bags of fertilizer bags of dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, six slabs of compressed dry leaves suspected to be Indian hemp 1049 rappers, three boxes of tramadol, two boxes of akpeteshie laced with marijuana popularly called ‘laka’ were all retrieved”, he added.

“On 30/9/2021 at 4:00am, The Asuom District Commander together with his men went on   swoop in Asuom and arrested suspects Kate Otiwaa, Asimah Emmanuel, Marfo Peprah, Paul Ankomah, Asiedu Daniel, Kofi Nyarko, Kwarteng Michael, Kwadwo Kyei and Samuel Amuzu together with some quantities and 1049 wrapped plant substances suspected to be Indian hemp…”, the police report had said.

It added that a search conducted in the house of one of the suspects, Asimah Emmanuel, revealed three sacks of plant substances suspected to be Indian hemp, 6 yellow tablets containing plant substances suspected to be Indian hemp and 3 boxes of tramadol.

Meanwhile, the suspects have been detained in cells and exhibits retained at the station pending further action.

According to DSP Tetteh, the suspects will be screened and those find culpable will be arraigned before the court to face prosecution.

He said the swoop is a warning sign to other criminals indulging in nefarious activities in the Eastern region and soon the police will clamp down on them and make them face the full rigors of the law.
