A fire officer with the Agona Swedru Fire Service in the Central Region, has lost his life in an attempt to save three persons who were drowning in a well at Gomoa Obuasi.

The deceased has been identified as Assistant Station Officer Joseph Baidoo.

Eyewitnesses say the three persons who were working on the well mistakenly fell inside prompting community members to call the fire service for support.

One of the fire service officers in an attempt to save the lives of the three persons trapped in the water drowned in the process and died.

The three persons were later removed from the well and are receiving treatment at the Agona  Swedru Hospital.

Some residents who witnessed the unfortunate incident spoke to Angel news.

“He stayed in the water for long. We were pulling him up when he fell back in with his head down so his neck went into the water and we pulled him back up with the rope tied to his leg”, a resident said.

Speaking in an interview with Angel news reporter, Opanyin Darko, the District Chief Executive, Benjamin Kojo Otoo, asked persons wishing to have their own wells at home to seek help from professionals.

“It is good to have wells in your homes. It saves a lot however, seek proper assistance from professionals to build your wells”.

Mr. Otoo added that “not everyone is qualified to construct wells or fix them as when they are damaged or require maintenance. There are well trained artisans at the assembly that can do those jobs so I plead with everyone to seek their assistance to avoid such unfortunate incidents”.

He also expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and the entire  Ghana National Fire Service in the country.

“I wish to use this opportunity to send my condolences to the bereaved family”, the DCE concluded.
