Pentecostal church leaders present memos to Parliament to support anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

A number of Church Leaders have stormed Parliament to present to its leadership memos in support of the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill pending before it for consideration and passage into law.

The church leaders which were led by the leadership of the Church of Pentecost presented about 15 memos with over 15,000 signatories to the leadership of Parliament to offer support to the bill.

The Methodist Church Ghana, The Apostolic Church Ghana, The Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, the National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches amongst other churches were represented in Parliament.

Their memos are in reaction to an earlier one from some 15 Professors and Lawyers condemning the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021.

The bill would make it a crime to be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender or to advocate for LGBT+ rights.

The academics led by Lawyer Akoto Ampaw contended in their memorandum that the Bill which seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ and adjacent activities, is an “impermissible invasion of the inviolability of human dignity.”

To push the anti-LGBTQ+ will be to challenge Ghana’s constitution and democracy, they also argued in the 18-page document.

But the church leaders disagree with the Professors as they argue it will rather help preserve the Ghanaian family value system.

The Catholic Bishops Conference, the Assemblies of God Ghana, The Ashaiman Muslim Community and the Islamic Council of Ghana have all sent in memos to Parliament backing the Bill.
