1 dead, 2 injured in train electrocution at Pokuase

The Pokuase Area Manager for the Ghana Railways Company Limited has died while two others have sustained injuries during a test drive on the Accra-Nsawam railway track on Monday, October 25, 2021.

Narrating the incident to Angelonline.com.gh, a worker of the railway company, Mr. Owusu Omane, said the Manager died while trying to escape danger during the test.

He said the train came into contact with an electric cable which electrocuted it, forcing some 15 workers onboard to make an emergency exit.

Among the workers was the Manager, known as Mr. Asante. He met his untimely death when in jumping to save his life, he landed on the wrong side of the track.

He said: “After constructing the railway track, we decided to test it. While en route the driver had noticed a sagged cable that had crossed the line but then it was too late to stop the train. When the train came into contact with the electric cable, it began to spark light.

“Everybody onboard started jumping out of it to save their lives but the manager was in front. Out of fear he also jumped but unfortunately landed on the track.

“The train, because it could not stop immediately, ran over him, leading to his death.”

The two other persons who have sustained various degrees of injuries in the event include the Traffic Manger known as Mr. Malik and Railway engineer Mr. Abeiku.

They, according to Mr. Omane, are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

Meanwhile Police in the enclave have taken the body of the deceased to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation.
