A former sergeant of the Ghana Police Service, Norbert Anane Dei, one of the police officers who was involved in the MV Benjamin cocaine-arrest saga, has recounted how he became a drug addict.

According to the interdicted police officer, he became curious after seeing people test the authenticity of the suspected cocaine which they had stolen from a drug bust operation.

He indicated that he became hooked to the drug after one-off trial.

Narrating his ordeal in Twi on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofo morning show, Detective Norbert stated that, his predicament begun after he and other officers stole a portion of some retrieved slabs of cocaine from an offshore vessel, MV Benjamin.

According to him, he sniffed the cocaine the first time out of curiosity but later became a frequent abuser to the point of selling his home appliances to cater for his addiction.

This created problems for him at both home and at work which finally led to his wife exiting their marriage.

He added that he deserted his duty which resulted in his sacking from the service.

In the security service, when you fail to report to work for more than 14 days, it is termed as desertion of duty and you can be tried by a court for that and so I was tried in absentia, he told host Kofi Adoma Nwanwani.

Moreover, he disclosed that he found it difficult to stop because of the painful experiences one has as withdrawal symptoms.

I was so addicted that I couldn’t go a day without the drug and when I don’t get it I get fever-like symptoms including vomiting, watery stools among others.

After losing his wife, his friends and job, he resorted to sleeping on the streets and stealing to survive.

He revealed that after fully recovering from drug addiction, he relapsed into drug abuse in an attempt to enhance his sexual performance after being mocked by a lady following his 3-minute performance.

Touching on his current state, he attributed his recovery from been a drug addict to God’s grace because all his colleagues who were involved in the same MV Benjamin cocaine saga are dead in mysterious ways.
