The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Somanya District office in the Eastern Region on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, vacated its properties to Juapong a sub-station in the North Tongu District of the Volta region.

The relocation of the company follows threats amidst a demonstration organised by the United Krobo Foundation (UKF), a pressure group in the Krobo enclave that gave the local station 21 days ultimatum to vacate the Krobo land since the community does not need their services anymore.

A visit to the ECG premises by ANgel FM’s correspondent, Opambour Jaaman Dehyie, revealed that only security personnel were on duty.

An attempt to reach authorities of the station for further explanations on phone proved futile.

But intelligence picked on the ground indicates that they have relocated until further notice to avoid any unforeseen circumstances occurring.

Background

It is recalled that the United Krobo Foundation (UKF), the pressure group, on November 22, 2021 demonstrated against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over the installation of new prepaid meters in the area.

With heavy security personnel on duty, the demonstrators chanted songs such as “ECG away, prepaid away from the Krobo Land” holding placards, some of which read “VRA Krobo’s are fed up”, “No prepaid in Krobo land”, “No bill No prepaid”, “freedom from ECG”, “VRA we need light from you”, ECG must go we want VRA” among others.

According to them, they were unsatisfied with the services rendered by ECG hence resulted in accumulated over-billing and nonreading of some meters for more than a year.

This, UKF and residents in the Krobo land asked authorities of ECG to stop reading of prepaid meters with immediate effect else face their wrath.

In this regard, they have stated categorically that, they do not need the services of ECG anymore, and therefore want them to move away from the Krobo land.

Currently, the community is calling for a direct power supply from the Volta River Authority.
