Resort to peaceful resolutions; not brawls – Former Parliamentary Clerk to MPs

Former Parliamentary clerk, Emmanuel, Anyimadu

A former Clerk to Parliament, Emmanuel Anyimadu, has expressed fears that Ghana’s parliament is gaining notoriety for chaos and brawls.

According to him, there is the need for both majority and minority caucuses of the house to sit and jaw-jaw as opposed to being on each other’s necks over the approval of the 2022 budget.

His comments follow a near-fisticuffs on the floor of parliament yesterday when Joseph Osei Owusu, the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, acting as the speaker turned down a motion from the minority side.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, asked Parliament to set aside the approval of the 2022 budget statement by the Majority on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, which the minority caucus had earlier opposed.

Member of Parliament for Ashiaman, Ernest Norgbey, in the heat of the moment whisked the speaker’s chair away as both sides shoved each other and exchanged arguments.

The former CEO of Parliamentary Affairs speaking on Angel FM’s Anopa Bofoↄ on Thursday, December 2, 2021 said that Ghana’s parliament is gradually reaching a point where exchange of blows would be a norm; a situation he believes would tarnish parliament’s reputation.

Mr. Anyimadu noted that both majority and minority sides are fighting each other regarding the 2022 Agyenkwa budget for the good of Ghanaians however; their approach has been appalling.
