The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has embarked on a meter reading exercise through a visit to households and businesses in the Krobo District to read consumption on their meters.

The all-important exercise by the company, which begun on Tuesday, 14th December 2021 at about 9:00am, is aimed at assisting in the generation of monthly bills for all customers.

In a statement issued by the ECG they called on residents to co-operate with the team to make the exercise a successful one.

“We wish to urge all customers to co-operate with us to make the exercise a success” it said.

It also clarified that “members of the team will be identified by their identity cards and ECG vests.”

Meanwhile, there has been a long lasting agitation between residents in the Krobo area and the ECG concerning issues of overbilling.

A similar exercise held in 2019 resulted in an impasse following police gunshots after a stiff resistance from the residents of the area where some of the officials of ECG were stoned and physically assaulted as their office was vandalized in the process.

Following that long impasse, several protests have been staged by a pressure group calling itself, United Krobo Foundation (UKF) against the Company over “huge” bills on power consumption.

Meanwhile, for fear of lives of ECG staff and protection of its properties amidst a threat by the UKF in a recent demonstration exercise saw the power distributors pack out of the area to operate from Juapong in the Volta Region.

The entire Yilo and Manya Krobo municipalities were plunged into total darkness on Monday, December 6 ,2021, after some unscrupolous persons cut down feeders at the Bulk Supply Point (BSP) which directly feed the communities.

Management of ECG, Tema Region, swiftly responded that it was as a result of overloading and faulty transformers within the communities following the illegal activities of unauthorized personnel.

Power has however been restored to the people of the Krobo District following consultative engagement between opinion leaders in the area and the ECG.
