The Western Regional Health Director, Dr. Yaw Ofori Yeboah, has directed some private health facilities in the region to refund costs incurred by families of victims of Appiatse explosion.

The directive to the health facilities was in connection with the promise Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia made to the Appiatse Community that, Government would absorb the medical expenses of the explosion victims.

According to Dr. Yaw Ofori Yeboah, some two families of the victims resorted to private facilities to procure essential needs due to exhaustion of treatment items in the government hospital, thereby incurring some costs.

“As head of the directorate, I have directed the private facilities to refund moneys paid for the essential services provided to the families and count the cost as part of expenses the hospitals have made in attending to all the victims of the disaster so that we can collate and demand it from the government as promised.”

He made this disclosure during a press conference held at the Regional Office of the Health Directorate to update the public on some activities the Ghana Health Service has been undertaking regarding the Appiatse incident.

Giving some statistics, he noted that of some 348 patients received in various health facilities in the region who have sustained various degrees of injuries, 2 have been lost while the remaining 346 are receiving free treatment.

“We are pained that we have lost the two, but of the 346 who have survived because of the efforts of the health care providers, many have been discharged. The health service providers will do all they can within their power to ensure that the necessary help needed by the remaining patients are given to them,” he said.
