Ghanaian counselor and media personality, DY Donkor, has revealed that high bride price and loss of personal freedom are some factors preventing women from marriage.

According to him, “marriage is a serious decision for everybody”. He said many people are afraid to marry due to varied reasons but when it comes to women high bride price and the fear of losing their freedom can’t be left out.

The counselor explained that, “many women are single not because they are not fit for marriage or do not deserve to have a ring on the finger”. He said the huge bride price their parents demand scares men away. Some parents will want to recover all the expenses incurred in taking care of their daughters and demand huge bride price scaring suitors away”.

He also gave the fear of the loss of personal freedom as one of the many reasons people are afraid to marry.

According to him, personal freedom is something people do not want to compromise with. The responsibilities that come with marriage and the sense of limited freedom it may present deters the youth from marriage. He explained that people do not want to be controlled especially today’s woman on when to go out, what to wear among others. This has led many ladies preferring to give birth rather than settling down with a man.

Counselor DY Donkor, who was speaking on Angel drive on Angel FM on Thursday February 3, added abusive parental relations and bitter emotional experiences as contributory factors deterring the Ghanaian youth from marriage.

He said that most people experience their parents going through abuse and emotional trauma in marriage which eventually leads to divorce, hence they grow up having the wrong notion that abuse is rife in relationships and based on their parents’ failed marriage they refuse to marry.

Another factor is what he described as “an emotional event that happens in the context of marriage “.

Throwing more light, he said, some have encountered bitter experiences in during courtship or their past marriages which left an unforgettable bitter experience, hence they become scared of marriage even if a second chance presents itself.

During the call in segment on the show, most callers attested to the factors raised by the counselor, who assured listeners that he will present solutions to these problems in his next discussion as requested.
