UG closes swimming pool following the death of Level 100 student

The University of Ghana Sports Directorate has closed down the school’s swimming pool, following the death of a level 100 student in January.

Management of the Sports Directorate made the announcement on its official website noting that the closure is “until further notice”.

“Following the press statement by University Management on the death of a Level 100 male student at the University of Ghana Sports Directorate Swimming Pool on Saturday, 29th January, 2022, Management of the Sports Directorate wishes to inform the University Community and the public that the swimming pool is closed until further notice”, the Directorate’s message read.

“We wish to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased”, the statement added.

The Management of the University confirmed on January 30, 2022, the death of the first year student after earlier reports the previous day that a fresher had drown in the University’s pool.

The University, in an earlier statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs Directorate, Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronya said the University is liaising with the Police to launch investigations into the matter.

Again, the University noted that “the family of the student has been notified and the body has since been deposited at the University Hospital while further investigations take place.
