GPL: Ibrahim Tanko appointed technical director for Accra Lions FC

Former Black Stars assistant coach, Ibrahim Tanko has been appointed as the technical director of Ghana Premier League side, Accra Lions Football Club.

According an announcement on the club’s official social media pages, the employment of the ex-Cameroonian assistant coach takes immediate effect.

“ALFC is delighted to announce Ibrahim Tanko as the new Sporting Director of the club. UEFA A-license holder Tanko has agreed a contract and will start work immediately in the new role created to reflect the future ambitions of the club.,” Accra Lions announced.

This will be Ibrahim Tanko’s first engagement with a Ghanaian club having spent most of his coaching roles in the German Bundesliga and Japanese J-League where he deputized Volker Finke at Urawa Red Diamonds, respectively.

He also served as an assistant coach at Freiburg in 2017 and FC Koln in 2011 before rejoining Volker Finke in 2014 as part of the latter’s coaching staff in the Cameroon National team.

In 2017, Tanko was named assistant Black Stars coach to Kwesi Appiah where he spent two years. He was later promoted to serve as the head coach of the Ghana National U-23, and qualified the team for the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, for the first time in 12 years.

The Black Meteors however missed out on qualification to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after they lost on penalties to South Africa.

Ibrahim Tanko, last headed the local Black Stars job in 2020 but was replaced after five months with Great Olympics boss, Annor Walker.
