He also served as an assistant coach at Freiburg in 2017 and FC Koln in 2011 before rejoining Volker Finke in 2014 as part of the latter’s coaching staff in the Cameroon National team.

In 2017, Tanko was named assistant Black Stars coach to Kwesi Appiah where he spent two years. He was later promoted to serve as the head coach of the Ghana National U-23, and qualified the team for the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt, for the first time in 12 years.
