Residents of Akrofrom in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region, are protesting against their chief over land disputes and lack of development in the area.

According to the residents, since the enstoolment of Nana Obeng Oduro, no development has taken place in the town.

The brother of the ‘Abusia Panin’ of the area, Kwabena Baffou Gyau, speaking to the media said he has started reclaiming family lands which according to the residents has never been the case during the reigns of his predecessors.

“When he came he asked all who bought lands in the area to present their land title documents for his perusal and the people obliged. The Late chief’s linguist who was in charge of signing the documents later said all the documents he had been asked to sign were all forged.

“So the chief [Nana Obeng Oduro] asked us to pay GH₵4,000 each for lands purchased in the area. Despite all bargains for reduction, he refused. Meanwhile, our professions are masonry”, said the brother of the Abusia Panin.

“It’s been five years now, he has never sat with the people to discuss issues bothering on development in the community” he added.

The displeased member of the community noted that due to the land dispute, Nana Obeng Oduro has caused the arrest of many residents which has aroused the anger of the people for which reason they protest against him in the peaceful demonstration.

Some members of the community who spoke to the media alleged that the chief comes to the town only on Wednesdays adding, “when he comes around, all he does is to summon people who have been accused of wrongdoing and fines them and leaves”.

Clad in red apparel with bands, they called on the overlord of Asante kingdom, Otumfour Osei Tutu II, to come to their aid by immediately destooling the chief.
