Government of Ghana has asked Ghanaians in Ukraine to find safe shelters to hide while it engages relevant stakeholders on the next line of action.

According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, government is worried about the safety of its citizens, including the over 1,000 students, who are caught up in the Russia-Ukraine political crisis.

Government’s concern follows a military assault on Ukraine by Russian forces with reports of explosions near major cities across the country.

Following a request by Ghanaian students in Ukraine to be evacuated, the Foreign Affairs Ministry tweeted that  “the Government of Ghana is gravely concerned about the security and safety of our over 1000 students and other Ghanaians in Ukraine and has asked them to shelter in place in their homes or in government places of shelter,”

The ministry gave assurances that it is engaging “the authorities, our relevant diplomatic missions and our honorary consul on further measures.”

Meanwhile, President of the Ukraine Chapter of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Dr. Phillip Bobie Ansah in an interview with TV3 stated that they are safe at the moment but pleading to evacuated.

NUGS, in a statement issued on Wednesday, February 24, called on the government to evacuate Ghanaian students from the disputed region.
