‘We’re stuck here’ – Ghanaian footballer narrates ordeal in Ukraine

Ukrainian-based Ghanaian defender, Najeeb Yakubu, has opened up on the ordeal Ghanaian footballers plying their trade in the country are facing, following Russia”s the invasion there.

Russia on Thursday, February 24, 2022 invaded Ukraine following the uprising between the two Eastern European countries.

However, the FC Vorskla Poltava center-back said he has Speaking in an interview as monitored by Angelonline.com.gh, said everything seems to be in a standstill following the bombing of the region therefore, has been left immovable.

“I am about an hour and a half away from Kharkiv, a city that’s been attacked. We’re just confused and we’re stuck here. Nothing is working; no banks, trains, taxis, airports or restaurants, nothing.

“Everything is finished in the shops. We don’t know what to do. We have to move as soon as possible but, how can we? We are stuck here,” he accounted.

The former Black Starlet player added that following the situation, his club has since advised the playing body to stay home henceforth.

“I woke up to the news [of the attack]. They sent an emergency message that there wouldn’t be training and that we should stay at home and be safe.

“I called my friends in the city that was attacked and they said this is not a movie, it’s serious,” Najeeb Yakubu said.

Meanwhile, Ghana Government has expressed concerns about the safety of Ghanaian students and Ghanaians at large in the country and thereby, asked them to seek shelter in their homes or in government places since plans are underway to evacuate them.
