The youth wing of National Democratic Congress (NDC) has added its voice to calls for the immediate evacuation of Ghanaian students in Ukraine.

The calls follow Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine amid the tensions rising between the two countries.

In a statement dated February 25, 2022 and signed by its National Youth Organizer, George Opare Addo, government needs to prioritize evacuating Ghanaians especially students caught up in the cross fire.

According to him, “the stories and videos coming out of Ukraine is cringing and we cannot afford to lose any Ghanaian in the skirmishes”.

The youth wing revealed that, other countries have taken actions to protect the lives of its citizens where as Ghana government has remained silent on the matter for nearly three days.

They also called on “government to put in measures to relocate Ghanaians student in a safer zone in the region or bring them back home.” They believe the ongoing stand off between Ukraine and Russia and it attendant military actions must not be taken for granted, more so when Ghanaians are at stake.

They further explained that this was not time for political indecisiveness and passiveness, hence government must fully use its diplomatic contacts and resources to ensure students are safe and kept away from harm’s way.

The youth wing of NDC, has also urged consulate in Ukraine to start mobilizing students and offering them shelter in the midst of the development.

Meanwhile the Minster for foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway has said that student living in Ukraine should find a safer place to lodge whilst government engages relevant stakeholders on the next line of action.
