The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa Nsuem Municipality, Geroge Mireku Duker, has awarded the overall best teacher in the area with a brand new car at an award ceremony.

The maiden Award ceremony christened “Duker Teachers’ Awards” was held at the University of Mines and Technology.

The programme witnessed 11 teachers and head teachers from Primary schools, Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools awarded with Chest freezers and 50-inch television sets.

Speaking at the award ceremony, George Mireku Duker said the award forms part of an effort to motivate teachers and change the face of education in the municipality.

According to him, education was one of his priorities when he was elected as MP, so he had decided to put teachers at the center of his educational agenda.

Teachers, he said, perform an essential role in national development, and teaching is pivotal in human existence and transformation.

Hence to achieve the sustainable development goal of quality education, teachers must be recognised, celebrated, and well resourced.

“Teachers have to be recognised because the roles they play are immense. They have to prepare their lesson notes and after, go and teach and mark afterwards. Beyond the use of the black board and talking, they also ponder over what to do to keep the children on the right path. They are also opinion leaders who help in shaping the future of the communities.”

Shadrack Oteng who won the overall best teacher and went home with a brand new saloon car worth $18,000 was full of praise for the MP.

He however, advised teachers to take the work seriously because “the future of the students rests in our hands” adding, “someone who is posted to a village would decline it but I believe God has a reason for posting the person there, so I will plead that we should work whole heartedly.”
