AFCON 2023 qualifiers: Ghana draws alongside Angola, Madagascar and CAR

Ghana has been paired in Group E alongside Madagascar, Angola and the Central African Republic (CAR) in the qualifiers for the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The draw was held earlier on Tuesday April 19, 2022 in Johannesburg, South Africa with 48 teams entering the draw.

Four teams were drawn in each group for the qualifications with the eventual group winners and runners-up booking their tickets to the continental showpiece.

Ghana who were placed in Pot 1 per FIFA’s latest ranking released earlier this month was drawn in Group E with Central African Republic, Angola and Madagascar.

Ghana Will therefore play Madagascar in their opening game of the qualifiers before taking on Angola and Central Africa Republic.

The 34th edition of the AFCON will be hosted in Cote D’Ivoire from June 23 to July 23, 2023 at six venues in five major cities.

With 48 teams competing for the qualifiers, 24 will qualify to the final tournament.

Ghana last won the AFCON title in 1982 in Libya and have gone four decades without winning the title.

Meanwhile, in the quest to end their trophy drought they recorded the poorest performance ever in the country’s history following their elimination from the group stage in January’s competition hosted in Cameroon.

Elsewhere, African champions, Senegal have been handed an interesting group after they were drawn in Group L with Benin, Mozambique and Rwanda.

Also, 2021 finalist and seven times champions Egypt were drawn in Group D with Guinea, Malawi and Ethiopia while five times champions Cameroon were handed Kenya, Namibia and Burundi in Group C.

Ghana’s rivals Nigeria were paired in Group A alongside Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau and the winner of the game between Sao Tome and Maritius.
