‘Our goal is to eliminate mother to child transmission of HIV’ – First Lady

The First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has said she is positive Ghana will soon eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, hepatitis and syphilis in the country.

The first lady’s comment came after Abbot Laboratories in collaboration with the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) donated rapid diagnostic test kits for screening pregnant women for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis.

The donation which was received on Wednesday May, 4, 2022 in Accra is aimed to provide support to six member states including Ghana.

According to Madam Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the gesture shows how committed Abbot has been to the cause of OAFLAD to help improve maternal and neo-natal care for pregnant woman.

“Earlier today, I received rapid diagnostic test kits for screening pregnant women for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis, from Abbott Laboratories, as part of their partnership with The Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), to provide support to six (6) member states Abbot will also provide training for health workers on how to use these test kits.”

Furthermore, the panel test kits will “help improve maternal and neo-natal care, which I am passionate about and is at the core of OAFLAD’s strategic plan for the continent”.

“My expectation is that this will facilitate our goal to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, Hepatitis, and Syphilis,” the First Lady said.
