Government has announced that it would commence the construction of a 300-bed capacity hostel in all the 45 Colleges of Education.

The construction, which is estimated at GH¢485 million, is being funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund).

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Kwesi Kwarteng, the hostel facilities have become necessary to accommodate the increased number of students and also improve teaching and learning.

Kwesi Kwarteng attributed the expansion project to education reforms which saw Colleges of Education being upgraded into 4-year Bachelor of Education (BEd) awarding institutions.

“The Government through the Ministry of Education (MOE) and its agencies Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has embarked on the construction of 3-storey 300-bed capacity Hostel Blocks in 45 Colleges of Education across the country”, Mr. Kwarteng said in a facebook post.

Meanwhile, in an interaction with the media on Friday, May 13, the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, said the project would commence in June.

He indicated that the projects would be executed by 45 local contractors and would be completed in 15 months after which there would be a handing over to the colleges come August 2023.

The minister also believes that the initiative in the long run would improve the quality of education in Ghana.
