A Senior Research Fellow in the University of Ghana Medical School, Dr. Dwomoa Adu has been adjudged as the best scientist in Ghana by the AD Scientiļ¬c Index 2022 Version 2.
According to the index, Dr. Dwomoa emerged as the best out of 1,000 academics that were featured.
The scientist was also named as the overall topmost scholar in Ghana out of the 231 scientists who made the ranking cut-off in 2021.
“The AD Scientiļ¬c Index 2022 Version 2 named Dr. Dwomoa Adu, a Senior Research Fellow in the University of Ghana Medical School, College of Health Sciences, as the best scientist in Ghana, out of the 1000 academics featured”, said a statement from the Director of Public Affairs of the University.
Dr. Dwomoa Adu, who is also a fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, placed first among the top 50 scientists in Ghana from The World Scientist and University Rankings for the year 2021.
In the current rankings,Ā Professor Daniel Adjei BoakyeĀ of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research andĀ Professor Ernest AryeeteyĀ (Former Vice-Chancellor) of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, were ranked 6th and 7th top scientists in Ghana respectively.
The 2022 Index further placed Professor Joshua Yindenaba Abor, Professor Dorothy Yeboah Manu, Professor Isabella Quakyi and Professor Robert Ebo Hinson (all from the University of Ghana) at the 9th, 13th, 16th and 19th positions respectively.
While noting that more than 270 scientists from the University of Ghana appear in the top 1,000 scientists featured, the AD Scientiļ¬c Index added that the premier institutionās scholars represented 30% to 70% of the top 20 ranked scientists in seven of the eleven subject areas as follows:
- Agriculture and ForestryĀ ā 11 out of the top 20 Scholars in Ghana
- Business and ManagementĀ ā 9
- Economics and EconometricsĀ ā 11
- Engineering and TechnologyĀ ā 7
- Medical and Health SciencesĀ ā 6
- Natural SciencesĀ ā 6
- Social SciencesĀ ā 14
The assessment procedure for ranking the 1000 Ghanaian scientists and their scientiļ¬c studies was based on international standard scoring systems, including citations in renowned databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Publons and Google Scholar, to provide the numerical indicators showing how productive and eļ¬ective a researcher is.
Meanwhile, the Alper-Doger (AD) Scientific Index 2022 Version has ranked the University of Ghana (UG) as the best tertiary institution in Ghana.
The University also placed 15th out of 2,049 universities studied in Africa.
However, on the global scale, UG occupied the 1,704th position out of 14,284 universities.
