NPP elections: Stop projecting only Alan and Bawumia – Kennedy Agyapong

Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten and Dr. Mahamadou Bawumia

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has condemned the projection of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Alan John Kwadwo Kyeremanten as the front runners for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2024 General Elections.

According to Mr. Agyapong, the leadership of the party must not hinder democratic practices by imposing the Vice President and the Trade and Industry Minister on the party but rather allow every flagbearer hopefuls to contest.

The two have been tipped as the main candidates for the ruling NPP government in the Presidential election to replace President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo whose tenure comes to an end in 2024.

Speaking at the NPP 2022 delegates conference in the United State of America (USA) over the weekend, the MP said the development has already created a sharp division within the governing party which must not be entertained.

“We have a sharp division, Alan-Bawumia [and this to me] is rubbish. If you are a democrat, why wouldn’t you want somebody to contest? You call yourselves democrats, if you don’t want anybody to contest, be a dictator and let us know,”

“So, if I contest you, I am not your enemy, but when you contest and you don’t win, the person who rather won, doesn’t want to deal with the losers and this is a problem” he said..

The MP who has disclosed his ambitions to contest the flagbearer position schooled the decision-makers of the party to allow the grassroots and constituencies to make their choice instead of imposing candidates on them.

“With my 22 years experience as a Member of Parliament, the gospel truth is that any party member who wants to contest should be allowed to contest because if you don’t resource MP’s and you make them unpopular, you cannot take them to the constituencies.

“The constituencies will rebel, so we should allow everybody who is a party member and has the interest in contesting to contest. If you win, you win, you lose, you lose,.. it is the people’s choice, it is not the party’s choice from head office” the business mogul stressed.
