Prison Officer swept by floods as he attempts to rescue trapped residents

A Prison Officer has reportedly been washed away by flood waters while rescuing residents who have been trapped following Saturday’s heavy downpour at Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Municipality of the Central Region.

The incident occurred Saturday, June 18, 2022, when officers from the Ankaful Prison Service were deployed to the flood-affected areas to rescue residents.

The body of the victim whose identity is unknown is yet to be retrieved.

The Central Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Joe Donkor confirmed the incident to journalists in the area and indicated that efforts were being made to retrieve the body of the deceased.

Meanwhile, some residents of Edina Abee, a farming community near Ankaful Prison have also been rendered homeless after River Surowi overflowed and destroyed properties in the area.

Among some properties that were swept away by the flood are, electrical appliances, chairs, mattresses, certificates, uniforms, and other valuables belonging to them.

The Central Regional Minister, Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, who expressed condolences to the deceased family described the incident as worrying and unfortunate noting that, the Prison Officer only exhibited patriotism in the line of duty until before meeting his untimely death.
